OVERKILL - Short
About the Project
A complete Covid production, with my sister as the leading actress and me as the villain. I had been given a prompt from University to turn in a film that embodied their given line. Although pretty general, I did not feel I had anything in my catalog strong enough to just turn in. So in collaboration through text with a friend, we wrote a script. I think that the effect of Covid had a psychological effect on our story, making it more dark. I had also borrowed a light bar from the school but was never able to return it as we were sent home without notice. I wanted to play with it and add intense lights you would only see in a dream. Big inspirations for this idea were David Lynch and Satoshi Kon.
The Journey
This whole film was made in my parent's home with just my sister and me on set. The challenge was creating a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere with minimal resources—relying entirely on lighting, color, and performance to build the psychological tension. Working so intimately with family during lockdown added a strange layer to the process. We were all stuck inside our own heads, which fed directly into the film's claustrophobic energy. This was the film I submitted to LMU and ended up attending for four years. In many ways, it marked the beginning of taking myself seriously as a filmmaker.
