Art Movements in Modern Media - Video Essay

About the Project

I had long dreamed of creating a full video essay that blends connecting ideas through innovative script-driven montage editing. At this point in my final year of university, I was finishing classes in production, film studies, and interdisciplinary courses required for my liberal arts degree. I was starting to make connections across history, philosophy, and theology in relation to film studies. After weeks of theory and development, we were asked to make our final project in one of the forms we had studied. I wanted to write something and connect my words through images—to create links in viewers' heads instead of just holding their hands. I started by creating a list of works I would draw from and researching their histories. I ended up writing a 15-page script and editing it down to 10 pages, then sent it to my friend John Mac for recording.

The Journey

I gathered footage and sorted each clip into bins matching the script's structure. Once I had the voiceover recorded, I started editing my visuals in a way that would bring the words to light—letting the images resonate with the ideas rather than simply illustrating them. This project taught me how to balance research depth with visual storytelling. The challenge wasn't just in finding the right historical references, but in editing them together so the connections felt intuitive rather than forced. It pushed me to think critically about how theory translates into practice.
